Zero 2.0 — What’s New and What Changed
Zero 2.0 is here — safer, smarter, and easier to live with
Zero 2.0 is a major upgrade focused on reliability, security, and everyday convenience. It builds on the original vision — your data, fully local and encrypted — and adds the tools that make protecting it effortless.
What’s new
- Automatic Backups — schedule daily backups (pick time & days) or run at intervals. A global lock prevents overlapping runs, and you can keep only the newest N automatic backups (manual backups are never rotated).
- Backups Manager — one place to create, schedule, restore, download, and manage retention. “Include media” is honored consistently across manual and scheduled jobs.
- Recovery Kit (optional) — create, rotate, test, restore, or disable a one-time kit that lets you regain access if you forget the master password. If you don’t set this up and lose the password, encrypted data remains unrecoverable.
- Template Manager (UI) — create or edit database templates directly in the app and spin up new databases in seconds.
- Tighter APIs for power users — guarded, local-only endpoints:
GET /api/get-credentials
— fetch a decrypted row (useonly_creds=true
for username/password only, with helpful messages when columns are missing).GET /api/file/download
— stream a single file field (works for DB-stored and filesystem files; decrypts when needed).
- Quality-of-life settings — timezone, default page size, theme, and a default for “include media” in backups.
Why it matters
- Less risk: scheduled backups + retention = protection without thinking about it.
- Real recovery option: the optional recovery kit gives you a safety net without weakening encryption.
- Faster starts: the Template Manager removes friction when creating new databases.
- Safer automation: local APIs validate identifiers, require an active session, and avoid leaking raw bytes in responses.
Upgrade notes
- Compatibility: your existing v1 vaults work in 2.0.
- After updating:
- Open Backups → Manage and turn on automatic backups (choose daily or interval) and set retention.
- Create a Recovery Kit (optional but recommended). Store it offline.
- Review Settings (timezone, page size, theme, include-media default).
Security hardening
- Global backup lock to prevent overlapping runs.
- Minimum auto-backup interval enforced server-side (UI shows and clamps to the active minimum).
- File fields in API responses return URLs (and a streaming alt URL) instead of embedding bytes.
Developers
2.0 introduces a minimal, local-only API surface suitable for scripts and integrations on the same machine. More read-only endpoints are planned; today’s endpoints are intentionally small and session-bound to keep the attack surface low.

🔐 Zero Has Launched — Your Private Vault for Structured Data
Zero is now officially live — a privacy-first desktop and browser-based application that gives you full control over your personal data. No cloud. No signups. No tracking.
Whether you're storing passwords, notes, documents, or any custom structure, Zero lets you:
- Create fully offline encrypted vaults
- Define your own database schema using text, password, file, date, boolean, or dropdown fields
- Encrypt only what matters — field-level encryption ensures performance and privacy
- Move, clone, and manage databases across vaults
- Upload files securely and preview content without ever leaving your device
- Search across vaults and tables — including decrypted content when permitted
Zero was built to be simple for non-technical users, yet powerful enough for privacy-focused professionals. There are no accounts to create, no sync systems to trust, and no third-party services involved.
What Makes Zero Different?
Unlike typical password managers or cloud-based productivity tools, Zero is local-first by design. It operates entirely on your device and stores your data in encrypted vault files you control. You decide what gets encrypted, how your schema is structured, and when your content is visible.
There are no analytics, no background connections, and no vendor lock-in. Your data belongs to you — and stays with you.
Designed for Everyone
Zero isn’t just for developers. It’s designed for anyone who wants to:
- Keep a secure journal or private notes
- Track credentials without relying on the cloud
- Organize sensitive documents with encrypted file storage
- Build local tools or dashboards with structured data
Where to Start
No installation needed. You can use Zero directly in your browser, or download the desktop version for better performance and file handling.
